DPF Warning Light On? Why We Don’t Just Force a Regeneration

A blocked DPF can be the result of another problem. We assess what is happening before recommending cleaning, regeneration or repair.

DPF Warning Light On? Why We Don’t Just Force a Regeneration

A DPF warning light comes on and the obvious answer can seem simple.

The DPF is blocked, so regenerate it.

Sometimes regeneration is part of the solution.

But before doing anything to the filter, there is a more important question:

Why has the DPF become blocked in the first place?

That is why we do not start by simply clearing the warning light or forcing a regeneration.

A blocked DPF can be the result of another problem

A Diesel Particulate Filter collects soot from the exhaust and, when the right conditions are met, the vehicle burns that soot off during regeneration.

If the vehicle cannot complete that process properly, the amount of soot in the filter can continue to increase.

The filter may be where the problem becomes visible, but that does not automatically mean the filter itself caused it.

Cleaning the DPF without understanding why it became blocked can leave you back in exactly the same position.

We start with an assessment

The dashboard warning gives us somewhere to start.

Fault codes give us more information.

But neither automatically tells us what needs replacing or whether the answer is simply a regeneration.

We look at what the vehicle is actually doing, what information is available from the engine and emissions systems, and whether there is another fault affecting the regeneration process.

That gives us a reason for whatever we recommend next.

DPF cleaning should have a reason behind it

There are times when the filter genuinely needs cleaning.

But we want to know why we are doing it.

If another problem is preventing the vehicle from regenerating properly, that needs to be considered too.

The aim is not just to get the warning light off today.

The aim is to understand what caused the problem and give the customer clear information about the next step.

A forced regeneration is not a diagnosis

A forced regeneration can help the vehicle burn soot from the DPF under controlled conditions.

But successfully completing a regeneration does not automatically explain why the vehicle needed intervention.

If the underlying reason remains, the problem can return.

That is why our approach is:

Test.
Measure.
Report.
Advise.

Then the customer decides what gets done.

The correct engine oil matters too

The oil used in a diesel engine with a DPF matters.

Where the manufacturer specifies a particular low ash oil standard, using the correct oil helps protect the emissions system as well as the engine.

Using the correct manufacturer specified engine oil is part of properly maintaining a diesel vehicle fitted with a DPF.

It is another reason why servicing and DPF problems should not be treated as completely separate things.

DPF work at Shaw's

Our approach to DPF faults is the same as the rest of the work we carry out.

We want to understand the problem before recommending the repair.

The DPF Doctor

Shaw's is part of The DPF Doctor network, supporting our approach to structured DPF assessment, testing and repair.

DPF warning light on?

If your DPF warning is on, the vehicle keeps trying to regenerate, or the problem keeps coming back, the first step is finding out why.

We do not start by guessing.

We check it properly.
We explain it properly.
We do the job properly.
You decide what gets done.
