A Pre-MOT Inspection at Shaw’s — What We Check and Why It Saves You Money

The MOT tests a defined list of safety items on a pass-or-fail basis. A pre-MOT inspection checks those same items beforehand — so obvious failures are fixed before they cost you a retest fee.

An MOT test is a pass-or-fail assessment of a defined list of safety items on a given day. What it is not is a comprehensive inspection of the vehicle’s overall mechanical condition — and it is not a guarantee that the vehicle has no developing faults outside the tested categories.

A pre-MOT inspection is a check of the items the MOT actually tests, carried out before the official test is booked. It serves a simple purpose: finding obvious failures beforehand so they can be fixed before the test — rather than after, when a retest is required.

What the MOT does and does not test

The MOT tests a defined set of items relating to road safety and environmental compliance: lights, brakes, steering and suspension, tyres, seat belts, exhaust emissions, visibility, and the vehicle’s structural condition in specific areas. The MOT does not test engine health, oil condition, coolant concentration, clutch condition, gearbox operation or general mechanical wear that does not affect the tested safety categories. A vehicle can pass its MOT with a worn clutch, leaking coolant or an engine burning oil — if none of those conditions create a failure in the tested categories on that day.

Why a pre-MOT check is worth doing

A pre-MOT inspection serves two purposes:

  1. It finds straightforward failures before the test. A failed brake light bulb, a tyre at the legal minimum, a cracked number plate lens, a wiper blade that fails the visibility check — these are simple to fix and inexpensive. Found before the test, they cost a replacement part. Found during the test, they cost the repair plus a retest fee.
  2. It identifies advisory items early. Knowing about an advisory item before the test gives you time to decide what to do. Knowing about it during the test turns it into an immediate conversation with a booking already made.

What Shaw’s checks in a pre-MOT inspection

  • Lights — all exterior lights checked: headlights (dipped and main), indicators, brake lights, fog light, number plate lights, reversing lights
  • Tyres — tread depth measured across the contact area, tyre condition checked for cuts, bulges and sidewall damage
  • Brakes — visual inspection of disc and pad condition through the wheel, brake fluid level, calipers and brake pipes checked for leaks or corrosion
  • Steering and suspension — checked for play at the joints, worn bushings, shock absorber condition and suspension integrity
  • Exhaust — visual check for security, obvious leaks and condition
  • Bodywork and structure — checked in relevant areas for corrosion that could affect the test
  • Visibility — windscreen checked for chips or cracks in the driver’s line of sight; wiper blade condition and washer system function
  • Under-vehicle — visual inspection of accessible underbody components including brake pipes, fuel lines and exhaust

If something is identified, we explain what it is and give you the choice of having it repaired before the test or proceeding knowing the likely outcome.

Previous MOT advisories

If your vehicle had advisory items on its last MOT, these are worth revisiting at the pre-MOT inspection. An advisory from one year’s test frequently becomes a failure on the next if the component has continued to wear. Your previous MOT certificate lists any advisory items — bringing it to the appointment allows us to check those specific points directly.

MOT testing at Shaw’s

Both our Kinmel Bay and Rhyl branches are authorised MOT test stations. We carry out Class 4 (passenger car) and Class 7 (light commercial vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes) tests. A pre-MOT inspection is typically carried out in the same appointment window. If we find a straightforward failure that can be repaired on the same day, we can often complete the repair and proceed with the test in one visit.
