Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection at Shaw’s — What We Check Before You Buy a Used Car

A used vehicle can look perfect and drive fine on a short test run. Here is what Shaw’s inspects when a buyer brings a vehicle in before committing to a purchase.

A short test drive and a visual walk-around tells you almost nothing about the mechanical and structural condition of a used vehicle. Many of the faults that add up to a significant repair bill after purchase are not visible without putting the car on a lift, reading its fault code history, and inspecting components that are inaccessible from above.

Why a pre-purchase inspection is worth doing

The asking price of a used vehicle almost never accounts for known or developing faults the seller is either unaware of or has chosen not to disclose. A pre-purchase inspection at an independent garage gives you accurate information about the vehicle’s actual condition before you part with any money. At a minimum, it identifies faults that would require immediate repair. It also identifies developing issues that will require attention within the next service cycle, allowing you to negotiate on price or decide to walk away.

What Shaw’s checks

Commercial vehicle on lift at Shaw's Service Station for a thorough inspection

A vehicle elevated at Shaw’s for a thorough inspection. Getting the vehicle on a lift is essential for any meaningful pre-purchase assessment — the underbody, brakes, suspension, steering rack and exhaust are only fully visible and testable from underneath. A walk-around inspection without a lift gives you a fraction of the picture.

A pre-purchase inspection at Shaw’s covers:

  • Full electronic scan of all accessible control modules — reading stored and pending fault codes from the engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, and body modules. Sellers sometimes clear codes before sale; pending codes and freeze frame data may still reveal recent fault history
  • Underbody inspection on the lift — brake pipes, fuel lines, exhaust system, subframe condition, sill sections, suspension arm and bush condition, steering rack boots and gaiters
  • Brake inspection — pad and disc thickness, caliper condition, brake fluid condition (test for moisture content)
  • Tyre condition — tread depth on all four, sidewall condition, any uneven wear patterns that suggest alignment or suspension issues
  • Fluid condition and levels — oil colour and level, coolant condition, power steering fluid (if hydraulic), gearbox oil where accessible
  • Visual inspection of the engine bay — signs of oil or coolant leaks, recently cleaned areas that might suggest concealed leaks, condition of hoses and belts
  • Road test — confirming that the driving behaviour, braking, steering and any reported symptoms are consistent with the fault code findings

What a pre-purchase inspection does not include

Shaw’s pre-purchase inspection is a mechanical and electronic condition assessment. It does not include a HPI check (finance or stolen vehicle history) — this should be obtained separately before the inspection, as the result affects whether an inspection is even worth booking. It also does not include internal component inspection such as a cylinder leakdown test unless there is a specific symptom that warrants it, in which case this can be added to the scope and costed separately.

Booking a pre-purchase inspection

You need the seller’s agreement to bring the vehicle to us. Most sellers who have nothing to hide will agree readily. A seller who refuses should be treated as a significant warning sign. Contact Shaw’s to arrange an appointment and we will advise on timing and what to tell the seller.
