What It’s Actually Like When You Bring Your Car to Shaw’s — From Drop-Off to Driving Away

Some garages hand you a bill and a vague explanation. Here is how Shaw’s actually works — what happens at each stage and how we keep you informed throughout.

There is a fairly common experience at garages: you drop your car off, you get a call a few hours later with a list of things it needs, you are not sure what half of them mean, you feel pressure to agree, and you collect the car with a large bill and a limited understanding of what was done. At Shaw’s, we work differently.

When you arrive

You are met at reception and we confirm what you have booked in for. If you have noticed something in addition to the booked work — a noise, a warning light, something that started recently — tell us now and we will include it in the inspection. For customers waiting, we have a comfortable reception area directly adjacent to the workshop with an MOT viewing window, so you can watch your MOT in progress. For customers dropping off and returning later, we call when the vehicle is ready or before, if anything requires a conversation.

What happens during the work

If we find something during a service or inspection that was not on the original scope, we stop, photograph it where relevant, and call you to explain before doing anything about it. You are not presented with a bill for work you did not agree to. We explain findings in plain terms: what failed, what it does, what happens if it is not addressed, and what it costs. That is what you are told.

When the work is finished

Paperwork and keys are ready for you at collection. We go through what was done — what was replaced, what was inspected, and whether anything was noted for future attention. If there were advisories, we explain what they are and when they are likely to become more significant. The service book is stamped if applicable. You leave knowing what was done, what the vehicle’s current condition is, and what to watch for.

When something significant is found

We will not recommend a repair unless we can explain clearly what the fault is, why it matters, and what the consequence of not addressing it is likely to be. If something is safety-critical, we tell you plainly. If something can wait, we say that too. We do not apply pressure to approve work on the spot. If you want to think about it or come back when it suits your budget, that is a completely reasonable response and we will give you everything you need to make the decision.
