How Often Should You Service Your Car — The Real Answer for North Wales Drivers

Fixed intervals, variable intervals, manufacturer schedules and what they actually mean in practice. Here is how Shaw’s thinks about service timing and what it recommends.

The question of how often a car needs servicing is one that has become more complicated over the years. Fixed-interval services (every 12 months or 12,000 miles) have been partly replaced by variable servicing systems on many modern vehicles, and the intervals specified by manufacturers are not always the intervals that independent mechanics would recommend in practice.

Fixed-interval servicing

Most vehicles built before approximately 2010, and many simpler modern vehicles, use a fixed service schedule. The most common is an annual service or every 10,000–12,000 miles, whichever comes first. For older vehicles, or those that cover very low annual mileage, annual servicing is important even if the mileage threshold has not been reached — oil degrades with time as well as with use, and rubber components, brake fluid and coolant do not improve with age regardless of mileage.

Variable servicing

Many modern vehicles, particularly those from German and Swedish manufacturers, have an on-board condition monitoring system that calculates service intervals based on actual driving patterns, oil degradation and time elapsed. These systems can indicate service intervals of 18,000–20,000 miles or longer. The intervals are manufacturer-approved and are based on the assumption that the recommended oil grade is used and that the vehicle is driven in the conditions the algorithm is designed for.

In practice, Shaw’s sees vehicles operating on extended manufacturer-specified variable intervals that arrive with oil that is significantly degraded, particularly when used predominantly for short trips, urban driving or towing — conditions that the oil condition algorithm is less effective at measuring accurately. The algorithm cannot directly test the oil; it models expected degradation from driving data.

Whether the vehicle is a van doing daily deliveries or a private car used mainly for short school runs, the service inspection is the point at which the accumulated condition of the vehicle is assessed — not just what the schedule says should be replaced, but what the actual inspection reveals.

What Shaw’s recommends

For vehicles on fixed intervals: follow the manufacturer schedule as a minimum, but do not extend beyond 12 months regardless of mileage on any vehicle that is doing primarily short trips or urban driving.

For vehicles on variable intervals: follow the manufacturer service indicator as the trigger, but consider an oil-and-filter interim change at the midpoint of the interval on vehicles used predominantly for short runs. Oil that reaches the extended interval under these conditions is doing more protective work than the monitoring system credits it for.

For older vehicles: annual servicing is more important, not less. More components are at or beyond their expected service life and the inspection element of a service — checking what is still in acceptable condition versus what is developing a problem — becomes the primary value rather than routine replacement of still-functional consumables.
