Summer, Winter and All-Season Tyres — What Shaw’s Recommends for North Wales Drivers

The tyre type question has become more relevant as all-season products have improved. Here is how the three categories differ and what makes sense for the North Wales climate.

Tyre choice was once simple: most UK drivers used summer tyres year-round, with winter tyres considered a European mainland concern. That has changed. All-season tyres have improved significantly, winter tyres have become more available, and the question of which type to fit is worth answering properly rather than defaulting to habit.

Summer tyres

Summer tyres are optimised for performance in temperatures above approximately 7°C. The rubber compound is stiffer and designed for grip on dry and wet road surfaces in warm conditions. Below 7°C, the compound begins to harden, reducing the tyre’s ability to deform and grip the road surface correctly. Braking distances increase, and cornering response becomes less precise. On ice and compacted snow, summer tyres provide very limited traction.

In North Wales, temperatures drop below 7°C regularly from October through to April. This does not mean summer tyres become dangerous in every condition — wet roads at 5°C are still manageable on a well-maintained summer tyre — but it means they are operating outside their optimal range during a significant portion of the year.

Winter tyres

Winter tyres use a softer compound that remains pliable at low temperatures, maintaining contact-patch compliance when summer tyre rubber has stiffened. They also feature a more complex tread pattern with additional sipes — narrow cuts in the tread blocks — that create additional biting edges on slippery surfaces and channel water and slush away from the contact patch more effectively. The result is shorter stopping distances and better directional control in cold, wet and icy conditions.

The limitation of winter tyres is the reverse of summer tyres: above approximately 7°C, the softer compound wears faster, handles less precisely on dry roads and produces higher rolling resistance. Running winter tyres in summer is legal but results in faster wear and higher fuel consumption.

All-season tyres

All-season (or all-weather) tyres are a genuine compromise between the two. The compound and tread are designed to remain effective across a wider temperature range. Modern all-season products from the leading tyre manufacturers carry the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, meaning they have passed the EU winter tyre performance test. This is a different category from ‘M+S’ (mud and snow) marking, which only indicates the tread pattern — the 3PMSF mark requires actual measured performance on snow.

In North Wales, an all-season tyre with the 3PMSF rating is a practical choice for most private car drivers who do not want to store and swap between two tyre sets. It will not match a dedicated winter tyre in severe snow or sustained sub-zero conditions, but it will outperform a summer tyre significantly during the months when temperatures are consistently low.

What Shaw’s recommends

For most private car drivers in Kinmel Bay and Rhyl: an all-season tyre with the 3PMSF rating is a sensible year-round choice. North Wales winters are wet and cold more than they are severely snowy at sea level, and the all-season category has matured to the point where the compromise is acceptable for the majority of driving conditions encountered here.

For drivers who regularly travel inland into Snowdonia or Denbighshire during winter months: the case for dedicated winter tyres strengthens. Elevation and distance from the coast produce more severe conditions that are closer to the environment where winter tyres show their performance advantage most clearly.
